Waiting for June
Lifestyle and Daily Shenanigans with a dash of Nerd Appreciation thrown in.

How long has it been since my last post? Well past a week, I suppose. I do apologise for the seemingly disappearing, but I promise that I did so for good reason. As you can see, the blog now has a new design and I find myself thoroughly enjoying the new look. It’s simple and compact and yet, it has an absolutely and dreadfully sense of allure to it that just leaves slightly in awe that I managed to create something like this. However, that is not the reasoning for this post and I’ll save the following tirade for one the upcoming posts.

Today is a bit of a unique one. I’m obviously well aware of the fact that I am terribly behind on my yearly posts, but life likes to throw me for a loop at the worst possible times. It’s absolutely ungodly and I wish I could say that this late posting will not be a problem in the future (and this is for multiple reasons aside from just life being life), but I won’t lie. So I do apologise here and now if I somehow manage to be that much of a prat that this draws out to February or March (gods above forbid that I somehow manage to stretch this until May or June).

That being said, this post is a bit of unique one because it somewhat diverts away from the topics that are considered the “norm” from my previous yearly posts as it falls under the category of gaming. That being said, this post is just as much of a Gameventures as it is a Yearlies post, so feel free to take it as you wish. I’m just categorising it primarily as a Yearlies because that’s what it is. It just so happens to be written in the form of a Gameventures review post.

So let’s jump right into this, yeah?

Now, if you know me, have been following me for quite some time, or notice some of the latest pots to be made on this blog, you’d know that I am absolutely in love with video games of any kind. I grew up being a huge gamer as my brother and cousins rubbed off on me quite a lot when I was younger (this could also apply to anime and cartoon, but that’s for another time) so gaming is a huge part of my life. Initially, I started out as a console gamer (and yes, I am a Sony4Life console gamer) and around my 7th grade year, I took a break from gaming. When I finally did go back into gaming around my 9th grade year back in ‘08, I decided to get into PC gaming and really, I should have known that it would be the beginning of the end for me.

I should point out that while I am a gamer and I thoroughly enjoy playing as many games as I can get my hands on, I am terribly hard to impress. I will play a crap ton of games in the span of a month and walk away with maybe one or two games that I proper enjoy and they tend to be action games, games with a hint of comedic gold in it, MMORPGs, and puzzles games...primarily. Even then, it’s few and far in between for me to truly like a game and when I do fall in love with one, expect it to be amazing.

The fact that I’m able to pick out a game to label as my absolute favourite in a group of favourites for the year is really saying something.

The game that I feel deserves this honour is a little gem named Atomic+ and is a product of Ahmed Khalifa of Amidos Games.

To put it simply, Atomic+ is a game in which you have to collect squares, avoid bullets, and survive for the longest time. To elaborate even more, Atomic+ is a game inspired by Super Crate Box, Super Hexagon, and previous game created called Chaotic. Atomic+ is a game that not only relies on luck, but also on timing and overall skills. It’s a game that pushes the boundaries between puzzle and action indie games and does it well, especially when you take into consideration its inspirations and its execution.

Now let’s talk about what makes the game so great. Honestly speaking, it’s the complete simplicity of the game. Literally, all you do is try to collect the squares on the board and survive as long as you can by dodging the bullets. When your damage bar is full, game’s over. That’s literally it. But what’s so great about that simplicity is the level of difficulty that comes with it. For most people, simplicity is always the hardest thing to properly comprehend. Our minds can understand it to an extent, but the more simple something is, the more difficult it seems to become.

While the game’s simplicity is what really makes me an addict to it, it’s the sense of difficulty that comes as the levels proceed as well as the fact that I’m one of those people that hates tasting the slightest bit of victory only to have it take from them in the blink of an eye by something so seemingly (too seemingly) easy. It’s also a plus that the music is rather cheesy, in my opinion, and just I loved how it just ties everything together.

In all honesty though, it’s simply a good bit of fun and sometimes, a really great relaxer. I truly enjoy games like this, which is hilarious because I’ve never actually properly got into Super Hexagon (maybe I’ll try again in the future), and I always find myself recommending these type of games to my mates because I think they’d enjoy it just as much.

You can find out more about Atomic+ via the category on the website. You can play the game on your computer by heading over to Newgrounds (with medals), Kongregate, or GameJolt (with medals). You can purchase via the App Store, but unforunately no Android version has been made (I’d recommend playing the flash versions anyway).

Whew, this took a bit longer than I intended due to the fact that I had an absolutely dreadful migraine from the moment I started working on this post up until the time I fell asleep. I cannot even begin to explain how awful that was for me. Nonetheless, I hope you enjoyed this post and get a chance to play the game. And hey! If you play the game, take a screencap of your score and post in the comments below. Or if you have game that you thought was way better, leave it down in the comments. I’m always looking for something new and fun to play. Until next time, darlings! ❤
